The Church of the Kazan Mother of God ( Dzintaru Dievmātes Kazaņas ikonas pareizticīgo baznīca ) is a Russian Orthodox church in the Latvian city of Jūrmala . It is consecrated to Our Lady of Kazan .

location

The church is located on the east side of the Grenzstraße ( Turaidas iela ) in the district of Dzintari at the address Grenzstraße 11, directly opposite the junction with Johmenstraße , which runs towards the church from the west. To the northwest of the entrance to the church is the Jūrmala globe .

Architecture and history

The current church was built in 2017/2018 on the site of a previous building. The original church was built on July 18, 1894, financed by donations. The church was consecrated on July 23, 1896. The building remained undamaged during the First and Second World Wars . However, during the time of the Soviet occupation of Latvia, the church was demolished in 1962.

From 2010 the services were resumed. In 2012 the property was returned to the Orthodox Church. The foundation stone was laid back in 2013 . However, the reconstruction was controversial among the public. Both the location on the noisy, tourist-oriented Johmenstrasse, which is geared towards pleasure, as well as the size and design of the church and, in particular, the height of the church tower were criticized. However, the Jūrmala City Council voted in August 2013 for the construction plans.
