Harkmark Church
The Church of Harkmark ( Norwegian : Harkmark kirke) is a long church from 1613 about 11 km east of the village of Mandal in the municipality of Lindesnes in the Norwegian province of Agder . The church is located near the intersection of Fylkesvei 203 and Fylkesvei 204, again a little east on Fv203 Tregdeveien.
The wooden church with 135 seats was built over an older church . In front of the churchyard outside its field stone wall and only a few meters from the road on the edge of the car park of the church is the monument of the stone circle of Harkmark . The stone circle consists of six circularly arranged steles with another stele in the center of the circle.
The place was the only trading post in western Agder during the Viking Age and it is mentioned in the Heimskringla . Along with the Vanse, Oddernes and Høvåg churches, it is one of the first churches in Agder.
The tower with the armory is in the east and the sacristy is in the west behind the choir . This was originally none and lower than the nave itself, but was enlarged in the course of a restoration in 1845 to the same width and height as the nave. The church got a new ceiling paneling and larger windows. Under the direction of CA Christensen, the church was restored again from 1972 to 1975. The paint on the walls was peeling off, as the wooden walls were probably unpainted until the end of the 19th century.
The two-part altar dates from 1651. The three-part altar retable shows the crucifixion of Jesus in the main motif ; the second and third altarpieces show Mary and John. The upper part of the panel shows the Trinity and under the main motif are the words Paul from a letter to the Corinthians . The Trinity motif was probably painted in 1710 when the church took over the altar retable from Oddernes Church and serves as a replacement for the Trinity symbol on the old altar panel.
