Sønderhå Church
The medieval Evangelical Lutheran Church of Sønderhå is located in Hassing Herred, southwest of Thisted in Thy in North Jutland in Denmark .
Sønderhå Church, made of granite ashlars , is built in Romanesque style, with a late medieval tower from around 1500 and a porch from the 19th century on the north side. The tower probably had a Romanesque predecessor, as the lower part consists of ashlar stones, while the upper part was built from yellow bricks. The tower has "false" gables. Their fronts point to the north and south instead of to the east and west. On the south side of the choir there is a (walled up, whitewashed) leprosy window .
The winged altar and pulpit date from around 1590, with paintings from 1708. The Romanesque granite baptismal font with a bowl from southern Germany and the Habsburg coat of arms is from 1575. In 1711, the pulpit was decorated by Thøger Thrane.
There are four checkerboard pieces on the church, and thus most of the chessboard pieces on a church in Jutland:
- on the south side of the tower, below the whitewashed part
- on the south side of the ship, between the two windows,
- on the north side of the ship to the left of the vestibule
- on the north side of the nave to the right of the vestibule
