The Berlin church music school in the Johannesstift was located from 1928 to 1998 in the "Heinrich-Schütz-Haus" of the Evangelical Johannesstift Berlin in the district of Hakenfelde . The joint sponsors of the school were the Johannesstift and today's Evangelical Church Berlin-Brandenburg-Silesian Upper Lusatia . In 1998 the institute was affiliated to the Berlin University of the Arts and gave up the building in Spandau.

The composer Ernst Pepping was an outstanding figure in the history of the house . He taught at the church music school from 1934 and lived there until his death in 1981.

The students at the Spandau Church Music School formed the basis of the “ Spandau Kantorei ”, a mixed choir that was present in Berlin's public with numerous concerts, radio recordings, etc. Other outstanding teachers were the composer Heinz Werner Zimmermann , his wife Renate Zimmermann , the organists Heinz Lohmann and Karl Hochreither , the composers Isabel Mundry , Franz Martin Olbrisch and Winfried Radeke and the conductors Hanns-Martin Schneidt and Helmuth Rilling (until 1966). A total of around 500 church musicians have been trained in 70 years.
