Matthäuskirche (Lucerne)
The Matthäuskirche is a reformed church building at Hertensteinstrasse 30 in Lucerne , Switzerland .
After repeated reformatory beginnings, all of which were suppressed, it took until the 19th century for a Reformed community to emerge in Lucerne .
The Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm III. and the estates of Zurich and Bern each donated a precious communion chalice to the planting of the church in 1827 . After that, not only German , but also English holidaymakers kept pushing for a church to be built.
The owner of the Hotel Schweizerhof presented finally a suitable plot of land next to the hotel, where the Matthäuskirche after plans Ferdinand Stadler's 1860 / 1861 in neo-Gothic style was built.
The composer Richard Wagner , who lived in Lucerne from 1866 to 1872 , was married to Cosima von Bülow for the second time on August 25, 1870 .
