Grünau parish hall

The Evangelical Reformed Church in Grünau is the youngest Reformed church in the city of Zurich. It is located in the area of the same name in the Zurich district of Altstetten . Although the building is called the parish hall (in dialect Chilehuus Grüenau ), it is still a fully-fledged church with adjoining parish rooms.

History of origin

The residential area of Grünau, which was built between 1960 and 1970, is delimited by the Limmat in the north, the Europabrücke in the east and the motorway in the south. In particular, the southern separation from the Altstetten district caused the residents of Grünau to want their own district center with shops, schools and churches. The Reformed and Catholic parishes of Altstetten also recognized the need for church rooms for the Grünau district, as the way to the Reformed Old Church and New Church Altstetten in the center of Altstetten and to the Catholic Church of the Holy Cross was felt to be too far. For this reason, the city of Zurich carried out a project competition in 1967 for an overall development with urban infrastructure and one Reformed and one Catholic church.

This competition was won by architect Walter Moser , who realized the urban buildings (kindergarten, school, leisure center, retirement home) from 1980. The parishes, on the other hand, decided not to build the two churches for financial reasons. Instead, the Reformed parish was looking for building land for a smaller-scale construction project; the Catholic parish agreed to support the resized church center as a tenant. In 1980 the Reformed parish acquired a building site for the construction project and in 1981 held a limited architecture competition. Architect Ernst Gisel won this award , but the building loan was rejected by the parish assembly in 1983. After a further reduction of the project, it was approved by the parish assembly in 1986 and the Chilehuus Grüenau was built by Ernst Gisel between 1989 and 1990. Thanks to this building, the Reformed Parish Altstetten can provide pastoral care in the Grünau area; The Roman Catholic parish Heilig Kreuz also has the right to host the Chilehuus Grüenau and organizes regular church services.

Building description

The Chilehuus Grüenau is located at Bändlistrasse 15 opposite the Grünau nursing home. From the outside it is designed as a low concrete building . In the interior, the materials used were reduced to natural slate floors, white plastered walls and exposed concrete ceilings.

The building is designed as an atrium around an inner courtyard on the western side. The hall church adjoins the foyer on the eastern side of the building. It faces north and has a triangular communion table , the shape of which refers to the Trinity , a simply designed pulpit and an electronic organ. Depending on the size of the number of visitors, the church service room can be adapted with a sliding wall.
