The Kirchplatz is a square in the old town center of the small town of Ruhland in the Oberspreewald-Lausitz district in the south of Brandenburg . There are architectural monuments on the side of the small square. In the center is the listed Protestant church, in the rectory is the office of the Protestant parish Ruhland.

Location and layout

The church square is on the west side of Kirchgasse with a short connection to Markt and Bahnhofstrasse , where there is another connection to the market and Brauhausplatz . On the east side there are further exits to Bahnhofstrasse and Hospitalstrasse belonging to the square . Bahnhofstrasse from the market in the west to the listed building at Bahnhofstrasse 25 / corner of Brauhausplatz in the east has been converted into a pedestrian zone . At the level of the church there is the Germania monument in a small green area between Bahnhofstrasse and Kirchplatz.

history

The history of the square is closely related to the history of the church. Until the current cemetery was established, the dead were buried in the churchyard and high-ranking, respected citizens and clergy in the church itself. Remnants of cemetery walls were found east and west of the church square. The current shape of the square and the surrounding buildings come from the reconstruction after the last great city fire of 1768.

Protestant church

The church had several previous buildings, most recently from the 15th century. This was also destroyed in a fire in 1768. 1772–1774 the church was rebuilt and renewed according to plans by Samuel Locke , with walls (especially the sacristy) and foundations included. In 1991 the church was renovated. Inside there is a baptismal font from 1710. In 2005/6 the foundation of the church tower was stabilized with concrete injection.

Schools on the church square

Building use before 1900

School buildings or classrooms were mentioned chronically on the occasion of the city fires in 1548, 1624, 1661 and 1768. In 1744 a girls' school was set up next to the existing cantor school. In 1776, after a fire in the town, “the new school, the current cantor's council” was built on the church square. This “required a total of 836 Tlr.23Gr. 9Pfg. ". In 1840, pastor Fürbringer set up the elementary school up to the 3rd grade, classrooms were in the cantorate (and others in the "Spittel" (hospital)). In 1870 there was a boys 'class (10-14 year olds) in the cantorat under the direction of Cantor Endemann, "the beginners class was on the church square next to today's Clausnitzer inn" (and a girls' class "in the old town hall" (now Lindenplatzschule) under teacher Ackermann) .

Bismarck monument

The 2 ½ m high monument made of sandstone opposite the upper parish was inaugurated on April 1, 1895 and was dedicated to Otto von Bismarck on his 80th birthday by the Ruhland Heimatverein; an oak tree was planted next to it. The monument was dismantled in 1945 and is recorded in the local list of monuments , the oak is still standing.

Germania monument

In 1875 the so-called Germania monument was built and inaugurated on the Brauhausplatz to commemorate the citizens of Ruhland who fell in the wars of 1866 and 1870/71. In 1939 the monument was moved to its current location between Kirchplatz and Bahnhofstraße for traffic reasons.

Younger story

In 1996/97 the church square was redesigned as part of the redevelopment area "Ruhlander Stadtkern" .
