Kirkowo ( Bulgarian Кирково ) is a village in Kardzhali Oblast in southern Bulgaria . The village of Kirkowo has 685 inhabitants (January 1, 2007) and is the administrative center of the municipality of the same name, Kirkowo, which has an area of 2,964 km². The village of Kirkowo lies at an altitude of 300 to 499 meters above sea level, 11 km north of the border with Greece . The former Turkish name of the village was Kırkova, which means "40 levels". Kirkowo does not have its own mayor, but reports directly to the mayor of the Kirkowo municipality.
