The most important incarnation series of the monastery is that of the Kirti Rinpoches , which goes back to Rongchen Gendün Gyeltshen ( rong chen dge 'dun rgyal mtshan ; 1374–1450).

Kirti Tsenshab Rinpoche (1926-2006) founded a Kirti monastery in Dharamsala , India , in April 1990 .

Current situation

On February 27, 2009, the monk Lobsang Trashi from Kirti Monastery set himself on fire because he wanted to protest for Tibet's freedom. On March 16, 2011, a monk at the monastery, Lobsang Phüntshog Jerutshang, died after setting himself on fire on the 3rd anniversary of a 2008 uprising. Chinese security forces then violently blocked the monastery and did not allow anyone to enter or leave the monastery, amid massive protests from the local population.

On the night of April 21st, 300 monks were abducted by the security forces and taken to an undisclosed location where, according to the Chinese state media, they were being subjected to a "moral education campaign".

Shortly after three monks were arrested in connection with the self-immolation of Lobsang Phüntshog Jerutshang at the end of September, two Kirti monks, Lobsang Könchog and Lobsang Kelsang, set themselves on fire again. Lobsang Könchog had all four limbs amputated, Lobsang Kelsang is currently in a hospital. Within a few days, four other monks of the monastery, Kelsang Wangchug, Khaying, Chöpel and Norbu Damdröl set themselves on fire. Then, on October 17th, the first female victim in this series of self-immolations occurred: the 20-year-old nun Tendzin Wangmo. Then 9 other monks from the Kirti monastery set themselves on fire. 2 nuns also set themselves on fire.
