The Kiso Observatory ( Japanese 木 曽 観 測 所 , Kiso kansokujo ) is a Japanese observatory in Kiso on Mount Ontake . The observatory was founded in 1974 and is directed by the Institute of Astronomy, Faculty of Science, University of Tokyo .

The largest instrument in the observatory is a Schmidt telescope with a 105 cm aperture . This telescope, constructed in the 1970s, is designed for photo plates with dimensions of 36 × 36 cm² and records a field of view of 6 ° × 6 ° on them. In 1987 it was converted to a CCD image recorder. At the beginning of the 1990s, equipment with a CCD array was examined. Later, a large-format CCD chip, shaped to match the curvature of the image field, was used; in this configuration the telescope has a high UV sensitivity. In cooperation with Canon , the telescope is 2011 with a scale wafer - CMOS sensor has been upgraded which has an edge length of 205 mm. With this sensor, the telescope captures an image field of 3.6 ° × 3.6 ° and is particularly suitable for studying faint meteors .

The Schmidt telescope can also be operated as a Cassegrain telescope.

The second telescope the observatory has is a Dall-Kirkham type with an opening diameter of 30 cm. It bears the designation K.3T .

The asteroid of the central main belt (2271) discovered on October 22, 1976 at the Kiso Observatory Kiso was named after the observatory.
