The Duden gives three possible explanations for the origin of the name:

  1. Family name derived from Kirst , a Low German form of Christian , by dropping the r before s .
  2. Job transfer name to mhd. Box by box, box, especially for storing clothes for the Kistler (carpenter).
  3. Name of origin for the place name Kist (Lower Franconia).
