The Grevesmühlen – Klütz railway line was a single-track branch line opened in 1905 in northwest Mecklenburg . The tracks on the line, also known as the “coffee burner” or “Klützer coffee burner”, were dismantled in 2006. The name arose from the fact that there was a malt house near the Klütz train station , which, among other things, produced a well-known malt coffee .

In 2014, the northern section of the railway line was reopened as a narrow-gauge railway.

Route description

The 15-kilometer route branched off northwards from the Lübeck – Bad Kleinen railway line in the city of Grevesmühlen . It led north through the Klützer Winkel , then further north-east to the small town of Klütz . Another five kilometers to the northeast is the Baltic Sea resort of Boltenhagen , which the route never reached.

history

The line was opened on June 6, 1905 by the Grand Ducal Mecklenburg Friedrich-Franz Railway . At the end of the 1930s the Luftwaffe planned to extend the route via Boltenhagen to the Tarnewitz test site . However, the project did not come to fruition. The travel time in passenger traffic was around 40 minutes with three pairs of trains in 1929 and almost 30 minutes in 1975. At that time, four pairs of passenger trains ran on the route on weekdays. The route had to 1992 course book number 783, then the number 153rd

On January 1, 1994 the freight traffic was stopped. In May 1995, shortly before the 90th anniversary of the line, passenger traffic was also canceled. In 1996 the Klützer Ostsee-Eisenbahn (KOE) was founded, which from June 6, 1997 offered tourist traffic with historic steam locomotives, diesel locomotives and railcars. This operation was terminated in 2005 due to problems between the KOE and its parent company. In August 2006 the tracks were removed.

Klütz station is a listed building . This includes the station building , a separate locomotive shed and one of the few remaining segment turntables in Germany.

Conversion to a narrow-gauge railway

From 2012 to 2014, a 4.5 km long line was rebuilt as a narrow-gauge railway with a 600 mm gauge by the Deutsche Kleinbahnen Foundation . The track is also called Klützer Kaffeebrenner or De Lütt Kaffeebrenner . The first rails from China arrived in Klütz in July 2012. In September 2012, the first two kilometers of narrow-gauge track were laid in Klütz and two diesel locomotives were brought there for transporting gravel. The work was completed in June 2014.

The rebuilt line between Klütz and Reppenhagen is used by diesel-hauled trains, occasionally also with steam locomotives. Operating days are from May to October, Monday to Friday. Among other things, the 399 101 of the Wangerooger Inselbahn, which has been rerouted to 600 mm, is available. At the same time as the narrow-gauge railway, the listed station buildings were renovated. Among other things, the historic engine shed was refurbished and the station building was restored according to old templates from 1906, with the building getting its original facade painting back.
