In the 1960s, Kladivadlo was one of the numerous theaters that emerged in the course of the development of the cabaret in Czechoslovakia and shaped the alternative theater and art scene in Czechoslovakia during this time . As a result of some bans, the theater operated successively in Broumov , Kadaň and Ústí nad Labem .

history

In 1958 the playwright and director Pavel Fiala founded a theater together with Miloš Dvořák in Broumov under the name Divadelní studio (theater studio), which performed in the city theater, among other places. After the two had finished their military service, the theater was renamed Kladivadlo and quickly became one of the most famous theaters of the new wave of cabaret stages. In 1961, the performance of Kabaret o myšidlech (Cabaret about mouse people), which received several prizes and awards, partly in national competitions, followed in 1962 by Láska a dvě variace .

In 1963 the theater moved to Kadaň after disagreements with the local party authorities. The plays Hudryjáda a Skorokodýl (1963), Ten kůň se musí nějak jmenovat (1964) and Máslo (1965) were performed here; In 1964 a special performance took place in Gera in the GDR .

In 1965 another, politically forced move to Ústí nad Labem took place. A new adaptation of the play Máslo was the first premiere. The ensemble was in the process of becoming more professional. This was followed by other, partly smaller and partly absurd stage pieces such as Podmáslí , Pravidla hry , Legrační variace (an adaptation of Lucerna by Alois Jirásek ), Na českým dvorku , Tři and others. Kladivadlo played in different theaters because there was no stage of their own. The ensemble expanded and could also come up with well-known personalities.

In particular after 1969 there were again conflicts with the party, pieces Rackové , Manévry and Královské variace were banned for a short time. In 1971, the responsible party authorities determined that the theater did not meet the “requirements for committed work” and Kladivadlo was dissolved.

The Czech theater critic Vladimír Just characterizes the development of the ensemble with the words “beginning with literary cabaret and ending with the staging of classic drammatic texts”.
