Clothes box

The Klamottenkiste (or good night with Charlie ) was a slapstick series of the Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation , which showed 120 episodes of old films made by American silent cinema from the 10s and 20s. The approximately 15-minute episodes were the counterpart to the ZDF series Dick and Doof , Fathers of Clothes or Men without Nerves . Unlike on ZDF, this series was aimed at children.

The main characters were Charlie Chaplin , Billy Bevan , Snub Pollard and other actors, mostly in the early stages of their careers. In some episodes Oliver Hardy (together with Larry Semon ) or Stan Laurel (in one episode also with Semon) could be seen, but never together in this series. The edited silent films were accompanied by music and commented on by Hartmut Neugebauer in a voice-over process . The rapid opening and closing credits of the series were composed exclusively of scenes from Larry Semon's short film spectacle The Show (1922).

The films were shown, but in different versions, in the 1970s on Bavarian television and from July 2, 1981 for the first time in the afternoon program of the ARD . From 1981 to 1985 many episodes with Charlie Chaplin ran within the shows Fun on Monday , Fun on Tuesday and Fun on Third . In 1994 there was one last episode that had not yet aired. TV series download sums it up: "The Klamottenkiste was extremely popular with the audience and was also broadcast in the GDR under the title Gute Nacht mit Charlie ." Other stations that broadcast the series were also Eins Plus (the former ARD cultural program), DFF Television and directly afterwards the state broadcasters MDR and ORB . In Austria, too, the clothes box ran on ORF in the 1980s .

The Klamottenkiste has now appeared in several different episodes on three to five DVDs. The last current collector's box contains 5 DVDs (total playing time 565 minutes) and was released on September 20, 2004.
