Klangspuren , also Klangspuren Schwaz , is a multi-week festival for contemporary, avant-garde music that takes place every September and was founded in 1994 in Schwaz in Tyrol by Thomas Larcher and Maria-Luise Mayr to provide a platform for contemporary music in Tyrol . Since then, 200 new orchestral and ensemble works have been created on behalf of Klangspuren.

One focus of the festival is the attempt to tap new audiences through apprentice or children's projects, for example. Unusual advertising methods and venues such as supermarkets and factory or tennis halls are used.

Artists who composed pieces of music for the Klangspuren Schwaz or performed at the festival include Georg Friedrich Haas , Helmut Lachenmann , György Kurtág , Johannes Maria Staud , Olga Neuwirth , Beat Furrer and Pierre-Laurent Aimard . Groups such as Ensemble Modern , Klangforum Wien , Ensemble intercontemporain and The Next Step performed at the festival .

In 2003 the South Tyrolean pianist Peter Paul Kainrath took over the artistic direction of the festival from Thomas Larcher. In 2013 he was followed by the German music curator Matthias Osterwold , and from 2019 the Austrian music curator and journalist Reinhard Kager took over the artistic direction.
