Classified road network
As a classified road network are roads called that part of a higher-local road network are. They are usually designated with the street category and a number, e.g. B. Bundesstraße 3 , Droga krajowa 4 or EN1 .
In Germany, the classified road network includes:
- European roads (E)
- Federal motorways (BAB or A)
- Federal highways (B)
- State roads (L) or state roads (S or St)
- District roads (K)
The classification is based on the traffic importance of the road. From the classification, the carrier of the road construction load outside of the town through traffic is derived , so the corresponding federal state is responsible for the maintenance of the state roads. It is possible to switch between different categories; for example, federal highways that run parallel to new motorways are often downgraded to state or district roads.
