Klaus-Dirk Schmitz

Klaus-Dirk Schmitz (born November 30, 1951 in Cloppenburg ) is a German linguist and terminologist . He teaches terminology and language data processing with a focus on translation- related terminology at the Technical University of Cologne .

Life

Schmitz completed his studies in computer science and mathematics at the University of Saarland in 1978 as a computer scientist. He studied Applied Linguistics and Information Science also at the Saarland University and received his doctorate there in 1985 with the thesis "Automatic Segmentation of natural language phrases" at Wolfram Wilss Dr. phil.

From 1978 to 1986 Schmitz was a research associate in the Collaborative Research Center 100 "Electronic Language Research at the Saarland University" and developed the English analysis component of the SUSY machine translation system in this context . Schmitz then acted in 1987 and 1988 as executive project manager in the cooperation project "PCs in electronic language research" between Siemens AG and Saarland University. From 1988 to 1992 he was project manager in the pilot project "Language data processing study component in translator and interpreter training". In 1992 he was appointed professor for translation-related terminology at the Institute for Translation and Multilingual Communication at Cologne University of Applied Sciences.

Awards

In 2010 he was awarded the Eugen Wüster Prize of the International Information Center for Terminology . He was the first German to receive this award.
