Wolfram Wilss

Wolfram Wilss (born July 25, 1925 in Ravensburg ; † August 3, 2012 in Saarbrücken ) was a German linguist and translation scholar . He is considered to be one of the pioneers in translation studies in Germany and was the head of language services in the Federal Chancellery in Bonn and director of the interpreting institute at Saarland University .

Life

Wolfram Wilss was born as the son of the senior teacher Ludwig Wilss. In 1943 he made his Abitur at the Uhland-Gymnasium Tübingen . He then went into military service until May 1945 , after which he was taken prisoner by the United States until June 12, 1945 . In autumn 1945 he began studying philology , German, English and Latin at the University of Tübingen . In 1950 he was there with Hugo Kuhn with a dissertation on Hartmann von Aue and Gottfried von Strassburg doctorate . In the 1950s, he continued to pass the 1st and 2nd state exams for higher education .

In the years 1954 and 1955–57 he was the head of language services in the Federal Chancellery in Bonn. In 1966 he was appointed director of the interpreting institute at Saarland University and in 1968 he was appointed to the chair for "Applied linguistics with special emphasis on the theory of translation". Wolfram Wilss became the spokesman and project manager of the former Collaborative Research Center “Electronic Language Research” at Saarland University. He retired in 1990 , but did not stop his scientific work.

In addition to the work Translating and Interpreting in the 20th Century , which appeared in German and English and became a standard work , Weltgesellschaft, Weltverkehrsssprache and Weltkultur , as well as a text on the history of his institute in Saarbrücken, were published. In his compilation , published in 2003, he examines the future of international communication in the 21st century .

Wilss was an honorary doctorate from Aarhus University of Economics .
