Professor Klaus-Werner Benz

Klaus-Werner Benz (born January 1, 1938 in Berlin-Wilmersdorf ) is a German professor of crystallography .

Life

From 1957 to 1963 Benz studied physics at the Technical University of Stuttgart . In 1970 he received his doctorate in Stuttgart, and in 1982 he completed his habilitation at the University of Duisburg .

In 1986 he was appointed to the chair for experimental physics at the University of Paderborn . In 1988 he received the professorship for crystallography at the University of Freiburg . His fields of work are applied crystallography and materials research of inorganic systems on earth and in space.

In 1989 Benz became director of the Crystallographic Institute and director of the Freiburg Materials Research Center (FMF). He was also Vice-Rector for Knowledge Transfer and Communication Technology at the University of Freiburg.

Benz was involved in the Spacelab missions D1 and D2 as well as in the European mission EURECA . He was an advisor to Japan's space program. He also held many academic and scientific honorary posts and functional positions.
