Klaus J. Beckmann

Klaus J. Beckmann (full name: Klaus Joachim Beckmann , * 1948 in Plauen ) is a German city ​​and traffic planner. From 2006 to 2013 he was director of the German Institute for Urban Studies in Berlin .

After studying civil engineering at the Technical University of Braunschweig , he received his doctorate there in 1983 as a Dr.-Ing. After completing his doctorate, he first completed a traineeship for the higher civil engineering administration. In 1985 he was offered a professorship at the University of Karlsruhe for the teaching and research area of ​​municipal infrastructure planning. In 1990 he moved to Braunschweig as a technical assistant .

In 1996 Beckmann was appointed professor and institute director at the Institute for Urban Construction and Urban Transport at RWTH Aachen University. He has been a member since 1998 and chairman of the Advisory Board for Spatial Planning since 2000 and since 1997 a member of the Scientific Advisory Board for Transport of the Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development . In August 2006 he was elected head of the German Institute for Urban Studies , and in October 2006 he succeeded Heinrich Mäding in this role . Beckmann retired at the end of October 2013. His successor is the former mayor of Leipzig and councilor for urban development and construction, Martin zur Nedden .

Beckmann was President of the Academy for Spatial Research and Regional Planning from 2013 to 2014 .

Beckmann is a member of the German Academy of Science and Engineering (Acatech) .
