Klaus Müller (born February 1, 1941 in Dresden ) is a German author. Müller became known through his escape from the GDR in a sailing boat from the island of Hiddensee in 1988, from which he voluntarily returned to the GDR after eight months. Friedrich Christian Delius processed the story in 1995 for his book The Walk from Rostock to Syrakus , Müller published the content autobiographically in 2014.

Life

Müller was born in Dresden and survived the air raids on Dresden in February 1945. He trained as a locksmith and waiter, and later worked in different professions. He worked in Rostock and Dresden, where he worked as a waiter, among other things.

Müller was an enthusiastic hobby sailor. At the same time, he had long been very fascinated by Italy , not least through Johann Gottfried Seume's travelogue The Walk to Syracuse . Since a legal visit from the GDR was not possible, the idea of fleeing across the Baltic Sea from Hiddensee grew up in several years. Müller worked repeatedly as a seasonal worker on Hiddensee in the 1980s. On the night of June 7th to 8th, 1988 he escaped in a sailing boat from Neuendorf on Hiddensee to Gedser in Denmark.

In the following months, Müller traveled to Germany, Austria and Italy. According to his own statements, however, he always intended to return to the GDR. In February 1989 he therefore returned to the GDR and was only sentenced to a fine after a brief pre-trial detention in the Röntgenhale Reception Center.

Friedrich Christian Delius processed Müller's journey in 1995 into his book The Walk from Rostock to Syracuse .

After the reunification in the GDR, Klaus Müller was active in various cultural-historical projects. In 2002 he took early retirement. Since then he has been active as an author and has mainly published books on the history of the sea and autobiographical writings.
