Klaus Speer (* 1944 ) is a German boxing promoter . In the 1960s he was a Kiez king in Berlin's red light district , and later he worked in the real estate industry .

Life

In the course of the 1960s, Klaus Speer came into contact with the West Berlin red light district. He rose from warehouse workers to managing the club Apollo 11 in the Potsdamer Straße on. After he had succeeded in establishing himself with his gang through the use of force and with the support of the brothel entrepreneur Hans Helmcke as a " factor of order" in the milieu, he was considered the "Kiez King".

On June 27, 1970, Speer's gang was involved in a violent armed confrontation with Iranian pimps, which was about supremacy in the West Berlin red-light district. The exchange of fire in Bleibtreustraße resulted in one fatality and three injured. For many years, Berliners used the colloquial language to refer to “Pencil Street”. For its participation in the shooting Klaus Speer was in 1972 by the Criminal Court of Moabit for formation of an armed heap, affray and unauthorized possession of arms to a term of imprisonment sentenced 27 months.

After serving his sentence, Speer opened a boxing school in Berlin , worked as a boxing promoter and, among other things, promoted the career of Graciano Rocchigiani . He was also active in the real estate business. However, he kept in contact with the demi-world and pimp milieu , which is why he drew suspicion from the Berlin public prosecutor's office , which had been investigating him since 1988.

On June 16, 1992, Speer was taken into custody on charges of being a key figure in Berlin's organized crime ; the trial against him began on March 22, 1993. The total of 21 charges included coercion , extortion , usury , fraud , bribery of officials, illegal gambling and illegal possession of weapons. After a year and a half trial, he was found guilty on February 27, 1995 on five counts and sentenced to five and a half years in prison. The proof sought by the public prosecutor that Speer was the “godfather of Berlin”, however, did not succeed.

Since his dismissal in 1998 Speer has been working as a boxing promoter again.
