Klaus Winkler (born May 25, 1949 - September 4, 1985 ) was a German football player .

Winkler began his professional career at Borussia Mönchengladbach in the Bundesliga . He played his first Bundesliga game on August 26, 1967 against VfB Stuttgart , the template for the 1-1 final result came from him. In two years in Mönchengladbach, however, he was only used five times in the Bundesliga.

In 1969 he moved to Kickers Offenbach in the Regionalliga Süd . With three goals in the promotion round to the Bundesliga, he helped the Kickers promotion. Also in the 1969/70 season, Winkler managed to win the DFB Cup with his team with two goals in four games, including the important 1-0 win in the 2-1 win in the final against 1. FC Köln . In the following Bundesliga season he scored eight times in 27 games. In the European Cup Winners' Cup (2 appearances) and in the DFB Cup, Offenbach failed in the first round.

For the 1971/72 season he finally moved to Hamburger SV . Winkler immediately became an important player and was considered one of the best liberos in Germany during his time in Hamburg . Johnny , his nickname, would appear 113 times for HSV in the Bundesliga over the next six years. There were also seven appearances in the UEFA Cup and two in the European Cup Winners' Cup. After the DFB Cup final in 1974 was still lost to Eintracht Frankfurt , the Hamburg team won the Cup with Winkler in 1976 and were also runner-up. This season was even surpassed the following year when the team won the European Cup Winners' Cup.

In 1977 Winkler moved to local rivals FC St. Pauli , for whom he completed 16 games in the following season. Nevertheless, the team was relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga North , in which Winkler also played for a year.

Winkler played a total of 165 games in the Bundesliga (18 goals) and nine appearances in the second division.

Klaus Winkler died of heart failure in 1985 at the age of 36.
