The Klausberg between Bregenz and Lochau (on the municipality of Lochau ) is one of several elevations from the Pfänderstock , which gained military importance due to the geographically formed narrow point ( Klause ) to Lake Constance and thus as a protection for the city of Bregenz. The survey was owned by the state until 1681.

The inconspicuous Klauspass (formerly also: Claus Pass ), on which the Klausturm stands , leads over the Klausberg .

Surname

The name of the Klausberg comes from the geographical narrow point ( Klause ) located here , which the Klausberg forms to part of the eastern shore of Lake Constance. At this bottleneck there were several military barriers to protect Vorarlberg from incursions by troops from the Swabian , Bavarian and Württemberg regions.

history

In the course of the Thirty Years' War (1618–1648), a new defensive position (called "Unoth") was built at the foot of the Klausberg from 1630, when there was an immediate danger of war from advancing Swedes also near Lochau and Bregenz. In the course of the rebuilding of the fortified works on Klausberg, significant parts of the state forest on Klausberg were cleared. In 1681 this area, which had grown back over with undergrowth, was sold by the court chamber to the city of Bregenz . This in turn sold individual parcels to interested citizens and vineyards have now been planted on parts of the Klausberg. In 1730, the mayor of the Hofrieden court reached an agreement with the Bregenz City Council on the taxation of the owners of these properties on Klausberg. With the abolition of the Mehrerau monastery in the course of secularization by the Bavarians, to which Tyrol and Vorarlberg were granted by the Peace of Pressburg in 1806 , the Klausmühle and these vineyards ( Prälatenberg ) were freed and sold to private individuals.

There was a major change on Klausberg in 1831/1832 with the relocation of the road to the shore of Lake Constance, where it still runs today. This road from Lochau to Bregenz was then largely completed by 1836.

The Klausberg is visually dominated by the Klausturm and the Villa Gravenreuth .
