The Klauzál tér (German Klauzál-Platz ) is a public square in the VII. District (Erzsébetváros) of the Hungarian capital Budapest . It is the largest square in Budapest's former Jewish quarter.

history

Market hall on Klauzál tér

The square was originally named after Stephan of Austria , the last Palatine of Hungary in 1847/48, Stephansplatz (from 1874 in Hungarian István tér ). Since 1907 he has been called Gábor Klauzáls , who served as Minister of Agriculture, Industry and Trade in the Batthyány cabinet during the Hungarian Revolution of 1848/1849 .

In October 1872 the István téri színház , the third theater in Hungary, was inaugurated on the square . However, a year later it was destroyed in a fire and not rebuilt. Between 1892 and 1896, a market hall with a raised central nave was built on István tér based on a design by Pál Klunzinger, reminiscent of the architecture of a basilica .

Between 1911 and 1941, the then line 2 of the Budapest tram crossed Klauzál tér on its way from the Ostbahnhof to Angyalföld . At Klauzál tér 9, a plaque commemorates Attila Gérecz, who died during the Hungarian uprising and was initially buried on the square.

On Klauzál tér there is (as of 2020) a fenced playground, seating and several sports facilities. It is known as the center of the nightlife district (ung. Bulinegyed ) due to its proximity to numerous pubs .
