Guido Rodríguez (born April 12, 1994 in Sáenz Peña , Buenos Aires ) is an Argentine football player who has been under contract with the Spanish first division club Betis Sevilla since January 2020 . The defensive midfielder has been an Argentina international since June 2017 .

Club career

River Plate

Guido Rodríguez comes from the youth department of the Argentine capital club River Plate , where he made his first appearances in the first team in autumn 2014. On October 10, 2014, he made his debut in a 0-0 draw (4-5 defeat after the penalty shoot-out) against CA Rosario in the Copa Argentina and stood over the full distance on the pitch. His first game in the top Argentine division followed three days later (11th matchday) when he was substituted on for Leonardo Pisculichi in the 1-0 away win against CA Belgrano in the 72nd minute . In the Torneo Inicial - the transition season due to the change to the annual season - he played seven league games.

In the following game year, 2015, he was only used sporadically in the team of head coach Marcelo Gallardo , but was on the pitch seven times out of his nine appearances. He scored his only goal of the season on July 18, 2015 in a 5-1 home win over Atlético de Rafaela , when he scored the last goal of the day shortly after coming on as a substitute in the closing stages. His goal was prepared by Fernando Cavenaghi , who had previously scored all four of Rivers himself.

On loan to Defensa y Justicia

With the commitments of Ignacio Fernández , Joaquín Arzura and Nicolás Domingo , Guido Rodríguez slipped back in the hierarchy in the defensive midfield of Gallardos Millonarios . On January 13, 2016, he therefore switched to a six-month loan deal to league competitor CSD Defensa y Justicia , where he was supposed to collect working time at first division level. He was already in the starting line-up on matchday 1 (February 7, 2016) in the 2-2 draw against Unión de Santa Fe . He retained this status until his return to River Plate. He left the club from Florencio Varela after 15 league games and the end of the loan deal on June 30, 2016.

Club Tijuana

Two weeks earlier, the Mexican club Club Tijuana had announced Rodríguez's commitment. The first division team paid a transfer fee of 1.75 million euros for its services. He made his debut on June 16, 2016 (1st matchday of Apertura) in a 2-0 home win against Monarcas Morelia . On the next match day, he was able to score in his new employer's jersey for the first time in the 3-2 away defeat against Puebla FC . In the Apertura 2016 , Rodríguez played all 19 Xolos league games from the start and scored three goals. In the Clausura 2017 , he only missed one of the 21 league games due to a red card suspension, in which he scored twice. Rodríguez was an integral part of the team's extremely successful 2016/17 season and was named the best defensive midfielder of the year.

Club America

On July 7, 2017, Guido Rodríguez moved to league competitor Club América in the capital Mexico City for a transfer fee of 6.2 million euros , where he met head coach Miguel Herrera , who had already coached him at Club Tijuana. In the 2-0 defeat against Querétaro FC in the game for the Mexican Super Cup on July 16, 2017, he made his debut for his new club. He made his league debut on July 30th (2nd match day) in a 2-0 away win against CF Pachuca , in which he was thrown off the pitch after 79 minutes after receiving the yellow-red card. Despite this early setback, he quickly established himself in the starting XI in Apertura 2018 . His first league goal he scored on November 20 (17th matchday of Apertura) in the away game against Santos Laguna, the only goal to win 1-0 and his first goal in the Águilas jersey . In the Apertura he played 17 games. In the Clausura 2018 he did not score in 20 appearances.

On July 29, 2018 (2nd matchday of Apertura) he marked the first brace of his professional career in a 3-0 home win against Atlas Guadalajara . In Apertura 2018 he was on the pitch over the full distance in all 23 American league games. He scored five goals in those appearances and prepared two more goals. With a 2-0 away win against city rivals CD Cruz Azul in the second leg of the final, he won the Apertura with his club. In 2019 Clausura he scored three goals in 21 league games and was eliminated with América in the semifinals against Club León . The 2019 Copa MX Clausura was won on April 11, 2019 with a 1-0 final win against FC Juárez . At the end of the season he received the award for the best defensive midfielder of the season for the second time. On top of that, he received the Balón de Oro as Footballer of the Year in Mexico.

In Apertura 2019 , he met three times in 22 missions. In the final for the Clausura against CF Monterrey they failed in the second leg on penalties , with Rodríguez putting his attempt over the gate and Monterrey so enabled the victory.

Betis Seville

On January 14th, 2020, Guido Rodríguez's move to Spanish first division club Betis Sevilla was announced. The club secured the services of the defensive midfielder for a transfer fee of 4.5 million euros and equipped him with a 4-1 / 2-year contract. He made his debut on January 19, 2020 (20th match day) in a 3-0 home win against Real Sociedad when he came on for Carles Aleñá in the second half . On July 8 (35th matchday) he scored his first goal for the Verdiblancos in a 3-0 home win against CA Osasuna . This 2019/20 season he played in 14 league games in which he scored the same goal.

National team

On June 9, 2017, Guido Rodríguez made his debut in a friendly international match against Brazil in the Argentine national team when he came into the game in the 68th minute for Paulo Dybala .

After not being nominated for almost two years, he played in two friendly matches in his home country in March and June 2019. Rodríguez was nominated for the Copa América 2019 squad in Brazil in May 2019 . At the tournament he was used in a group game.
