The 2nd Piano Sonata in G sharp minor op. 19 by the Russian composer and pianist Alexander Scriabin (1872–1915) with the title “Sonate Fantaisie” was finished in 1897 and is in two movements.

Emergence

Alexander Scriabin's 2nd Piano Sonata in G sharp minor, Op. 19 was probably started in 1892, but was not finished until 1897 during a stay in the Crimea and in Paris in the autumn of the same year . The fair copy was made by the pianist Vera Ivanovna Issakovich, Scriabin's wife since the summer of 1897. From Vienna it was sent to Mitrofan Beljajew , Scriabin's patron and publisher, who immediately had it prepared for printing.

The sonata with a playing time of about 11 to 12 minutes has two movements:

  • I. Andante
  • II. Presto

The work is entitled “Sonate-Fantaisie” and shares both key and two-movement with an unnumbered youth sonata of Scriabin from 1886. The two movement also points back to Beethoven's two-movement sonatas (opp. 78, 90, 111). Unlike Beethoven in both sets have the Sonata Skryabin, however, exposure and recapitulation greater size and weight than the implementation .

The main theme of the first movement (G sharp minor) is characterized by a short motif ending with three knocking triplet eighth. The secondary theme is in B major. Pronounced coloristic-ornamental figurations bring parts of the movement closer to impressionism . The second movement is characterized by continuous, flowing, wave-like, extremely rapid triplets.

According to Scriabin's own statement, the 2nd sonata is inspired by impressions of various sea moods. The first movement (mainly created in Genoa ) evokes calm in the evening and moonlight at night on a seashore, while the second reflects a stormy sea.
