Little Stuart - The Story of an Unusual Family (Original Title: Stuart Little ) is a 1945 children's book by the American author Elwyn Brooks White . The illustrations were created by Garth Williams .

The first German-language transmission comes from Heinrich Hecke and appeared in 1950 under the title Rikki. The adventurous story of a little mouse in Babicky , Vienna and Heidelberg . The Diogenes Verlag , Zurich , 1978 brought a new translation of Ute Haffmans out who has since been used.

The Little family are looking forward to their second child, but Mrs. Little gives birth to a mouse , which is named Little Stuart. His mouse shape doesn't bother his older brother George in any way. Little Stuart himself sees his small height as a blessing when it comes to making small repairs on the piano or even climbing down the drain pipe.

But the house cat Snowball sees food in Little Stuart and tries to get rid of him. Stuart also amazes people when he takes part in a regatta in a small sailboat in Central Park's pond .

One day he meets the little bird lady Margalo and the two become very good friends. Margalo even saves his life when little Stuart gets into a garbage truck.

A difficult turn comes in spring: Snowball the cat is planning a plot against Margalo with a street cat, but a pigeon happens to be a witness and leaves Margalo a warning letter. Without saying goodbye, Margalo flees the Littles' house.

Stuart can't believe that his girlfriend is missing and decides to leave the safe house to find her. He gets into his toy car and goes on a long journey, where he gets the opportunity to be a substitute teacher at a school. He meets the girl Harietta Ames, who is just as tall as him.

The book was filmed under the title Stuart Little with Hugh Laurie as Mr. Little, Geena Davis as Mrs. Little and Jonathan Lipnicki as George Little. The animated Stuart Little was originally voiced by Michael J. Fox . The film received two sequels and an animated series of the same name followed.
