The small grassland mouse ( Akodon mimus ) is a rodent species from the genus of the South American field mice ( Akodon ). Its distribution area extends on the eastern slopes of the Andes from the Puno region in southeastern Peru to the Cochabamba department in central Bolivia .

features

The head-torso length averages 97 mm, the tail length 94 mm, the ear length 18 mm and the hind foot length 24 mm. No specific data are available on weight. The fur is monochrome gray-brown, with the peritoneum contrasting slightly with the fur on the back. There is no eye ring. Many specimens have a whitish spot on their chin. The tail is one color dark.

habitat

The small grassland mouse inhabits elven forests and cloud forests at higher altitudes as well as the transition area between the two biotopes . It can also be found in grasslands at altitudes between 2000 and 3700 m as well as on cultivated areas and sheep pastures.

Way of life

The little prairie mouse is omnivorous , but its main diet consists of insects . There is little information about their reproductive behavior. Pregnant females with an average of two embryos were caught in October. A suckling female was caught in June.

status

The IUCN classifies the small grassland mouse as “not at risk” ( least concern ). It is a common species in Bolivia, where it occurs in four protected regions. No population data are available for Peru.
