The pilgrimage church of Sankt Sebastian , also called Kleine Kappl based on the Holy Trinity Church in Kappl , is located on a hill in the Tirschenreuth district near the village of Ottengrün , Bad Neualbenreuth market .
Pilgrimage
A pilgrimage in costume takes place there once a year. The beginnings of this place of pilgrimage go back to the 15th century, when the predecessor building of the Kleine Kappl, a chapel of the Ottengrün estate, was built. Since the plague was raging at that time , the chapel was dedicated to St. Sebastian . Soon afterwards, the pilgrimage to the saint, venerated as patron of the plague and cattle, began.
New building
In 1725 the dilapidated chapel was demolished and replaced by a new building, the current church. Principal and founder of the Church were Johann Joseph Werndl of Lehenstein , the 23-year Second and six years first mayor of the city of Eger was, and his wife Maria Sophia.
The church with the rococo pulpit is particularly eye- catching . In addition to the two side altars, whose style is similar to that of the baroque main altar, there is a rococo altar in the north side of the choir. The ceiling frescoes from 1770 and the altarpiece are by the Egerland baroque painter Elias Dollhopf .
history
The big church bell from 1761 had an eventful fate. When it was supposed to be handed in for war purposes during the First World War , it was spared this lot because of its value. But in 1942 she too had to be delivered. It is only thanks to a coincidence that this historic bell was able to take its place undamaged again after the end of the war.
