The small thistle weevil or two-colored thistle weevil ( Lixus filiformis ) is a beetle from the family of the weevils (Curculionidae).
features
The elongated, slender beetles are between 4 and 9.5 millimeters in length. Their dark brown to black body is covered with fine yellow hairs. The pronotum is finely and densely punctured. The elytra are slightly marbled hairy.
distribution
The species is widespread in Europe. Their occurrence extends in the north to southern Sweden and England. In the south, the distribution area extends over the entire Mediterranean region (North Africa, Middle East ). The species is also represented in Madeira and the Canary Islands . In Central Europe, the species occurs mainly in warm areas and is very rare in some areas.
Way of life
The beetles appear from April. You can see them until June. After mating, several eggs are laid on the stems of the host plants. Among the host plants include various carduus (including Krause ring thistle ( Carduus crispus ), the Nodding Thistle ( Carduus nutans ) and Carduus pycnocephalus ), the creeping thistle ( Cirsium arvense ) and Spear Thistle ( Cirsium vulgare ) and milk thistle ( Silybum marianum ). The larva develops in the stem, pupation usually takes place in the root neck . The univoltine beetle species forms one generation per year.

The species was scientifically described in 1781 by Johann Christian Fabricius as Curculio filiformis Fabricius , 1781. In addition to this designation, the following synonyms can be found in the literature :
