Kleiner Halken 1–4 is the name registered in the local monument register for a former monument area in Aschersleben in Saxony-Anhalt .

location

It was located in the southern part of the city center of Aschersleben, south of the Sankt-Stephani-Kirche between the Grosse Halken in the west and the Fleischhauerstraße. In the monument area, the houses Kleiner Halken 2 and 3 are also designated as individual monuments.

History and architecture

The name Halken goes back to small market halls or sales stalls called Hallechen , which were built in the 13th century south of the St. Stephen's Church. The resulting permanent stalls were converted into houses and later expanded. The result is the very small-scale urban quarter. Small craftsmen in particular ran their businesses in the alley.

The short, narrow street Kleiner Halken runs in a west-east direction. On its northern side it is bordered by the rear of the Old Stephaneum . The actual houses of the alley are on its south side. These are one to two-story plastered buildings that were built between the 17th and 19th centuries. The cobblestone pavement of the alley also belongs to the monument area .

In the period after 1990 some of the buildings were empty. The building fabric in need of renovation continued to deteriorate. Today (as of 2016) only small remains of the houses Halken 1, 2 and 3 have survived, which leads to an impairment of the monument ensemble. Only the corner building on Fleischhauerstraße, Kleiner Halken 4, is completely preserved and in use. Due to the demolition of buildings south of Kleiner Halken 4 along Fleischhauerstraße, the south side is currently free (as of 2016). A local citizens' initiative is committed to maintaining the Kleiner Halkens.

In the local monument register, the street was registered as a monument area under registration number 094 80501. However, after the demolition of houses number 1, 2 and 3, the monument area was deleted from the monument register in 2017.
