Reed banks on the Kleiner Montiggler See

The Kleine Montiggler See (Italian Lago Piccolo di Monticolo ) is located in the Überetsch in South Tyrol ( Italy ).

location

The lake is located at an altitude of 514 m in the Montiggl Forest on the Mitterberg , northeast of Montiggl , a fraction of the municipality of Appiano . It can be reached via several hiking trails from different directions. The nearest access road for cars ends a few hundred meters southwest at the Great Montiggler Lake .

topography

The Kleine Montiggler See is about 5.2 hectares in size, its shoreline is 890 m long. With an average depth of 9.9 m (maximum: 14.8 m) it holds a volume of approx. 500,000 m³. The catchment area of the lake is about 1.25 km².

In the water-rich seasons, it is drained by a small stream to the Great Montiggler Lake.

ecology

The Kleine Montiggler See is classified as meso to eutrophic . The high nutrient content results from four factors: a high natural load (such as leaves, dust), the very low water exchange, the shape of the lake's basin with steep walls and extensive depths, and heavy human use. As a protective measure, deep water has been pumped out periodically since 1979.

Analyzes of the water quality with regard to suitability as a bathing lake yielded very good results.

Human use

The area of the Montiggler Lakes serves as a popular recreational area. On the west side of the small lake there is a small inn and a bathing establishment.
