The Mitterberg ( Italian Monte di Mezzo ) is an approximately 14 km long ridge in South Tyrol , which - in front of the Mendelkamm to the east - runs in a north-south direction through the Adige Valley . It separates the hilly landscape of the Überetsch from the valley floor of the Unterland with the course of the Etsch . In the north, the Mitterberg belongs to the municipality of Bozen, where it forms the Kaiserberg . There are Sigmundskron Castle and a former garbage dump. In its middle course, the Mitterberg breaks off on the eastern flank with high, steep rock faces to the lowlands; from the west, on the other hand, it only appears as a small chain of hills in the area of the Great and Small Montiggler Lake (there it belongs to the communities of Eppan and Kaltern ). Most of the southern Mitterberg, and with it the eastern shore of Lake Caldaro, belongs to the municipality of Pfatten , which also has the Mitterberg in its coat of arms. The Kreiter Sattel ( 382  m ) above the Laimburg is the only road crossing over the Mitterberg at the height of the Kalterer See. The ruins of Leuchtenburg rise south of the Kreiter saddle at 576  m slm . The highest peak of the Mitterberg is the Hohenbühl at 690  m . There are debris as the remains of a hill fort . There are other traces of a hill fort in the vicinity of the Great Montiggler Lake. The hamlet of Gmund, which belongs to Pfatten, is located on the steep southern drop of the Mitterberg .

Sigmundskron Castle is located at the northern end of Mitterberg.

The Mitterberg is made up of the Etschtal volcanic group ( Bozen quartz porphyry ). It is in the area of influence of air currents from the Mediterranean area, which favor warmth-loving vegetation with sweet chestnut , manna ash , hackberry and downy oak . On dry grasslands thrive Steifhalm (Kengia serotina), Macaroni Aster , dental comfort and other features. In early spring the Fabion Valley (also known as the spring valley ) has a considerable number of visitors every year; The reason for this is the blooming spring knot flowers , which cover the ground with a striking white carpet.

The Stadlhof cemetery, named after a nearby farm, is located on the road to Kreiter Sattel at today's Laimburg test center . On the southern foothills of the Mitterberg there are striking stone formations with the horse teeth.
