The small ornamental tetra ( Nannostomus minimus ) belongs to the family of the slim tetra (Lebiasinidae) and occurs in northeastern South America, in Guyana in the river basins of Mazaruni and Potaro .

With a maximum length of 2.3 cm, the small ornamental tetra is the smallest Nannostomus species and at the same time the smallest slim tetra, one of the smallest species of the tetra-like order and one of the smallest South American freshwater fish . It swims horizontally and has the typical, spindle-shaped body of the Nannostomus species. The top of the head and back are olive green, the scales have a narrow, black border. From the tip of the snout to the base of the caudal fin runs a black longitudinal band, often reddish in the middle, accompanied by a yellowish, greenish shimmering band at the top and a silvery-white band at the bottom. The upper, yellowish band has a black border at the top. The iris is yellowish above, silvery below. Dorsal, pectoral and pelvic fins are colorless and transparent, the base of the caudal fin is yellow-green to orange-brown. Females are more powerfully built and have a straight edge of the anal fin, males are slimmer, the anal fin is elongated like a lobe and the central anal fin rays are slightly blackish.
