Kleinmeister (16th century)

The Kleinmeister were a group of artists active in the first half of the 16th century who produced small prints, some of which were only the size of postage stamps. Most of them were detailed copperplate engravings . In addition to religious, mythological, historical and allegorical themes, the small masters also used descriptions from everyday life and politics in their works. Because of the pronounced relation to reality, parallels to genre painting can be drawn in the descriptions of everyday life. The ornamental stitches of the Kleinmeister are based on Italian Renaissance art.

A clear classification and delimitation of the term turns out to be difficult. Sometimes only Hans Sebald Beham , Barthel Beham and Georg Pencz , who temporarily lived in Nuremberg, are counted among the minor masters . In many cases, however, other artists, some from France and the Netherlands, are counted among them. In detail, these are Heinrich Aldegrever , Jakob Binck , Hans Brosamer , Daniel Hopfer , Ludwig Krug , Johann Ladenspelder , Jost Amman and Albrecht Altdorfer . The small masters were also active in other fields of art, such as panel painting.

The term "small master" was used by Joachim von Sandrart as early as 1679 .
