Heinrich Aldegrever , in the Low German language of his homeland actually Hinrik Trippenmäker , (*  1502 in Paderborn , † between 1555 and 1561 in Soest ) was an important German engraver , painter and seal cutter of the Renaissance .

Life

Aldegrever was the son of the middle-class clog maker Hermann Trippenmäker and his wife Katharina. Since no painters' guild can be found in Paderborn at this time , it is likely that Aldegrever had learned in Soest.

At the age of 19, Aldegrever was accepted as a journeyman in the workshop of the painter Ludger tom Ring the Elder in Münster around 1521 . Aldegrever's years of traveling could have led him to the Netherlands . Influences from Joos van Cleve and Jan Gossaert are discussed .

As a result, Aldegrever worked in the then important Westphalian city of Soest am Hellweg . His early work there, the St. Mary 's altar from 1525 installed in the Soest Wiesenkirche , is still entirely based on Catholic religious ideas. But the artist soon turned to Reformation ideas. He also moved away from painting towards copperplate engraving , strongly influenced by his role model Albrecht Dürer . Whether Aldegrever was also with Dürer in Nuremberg , which after an analysis of his painting style would be quite possible, or whether he was based on works by Dürer, must remain open. The admiration for the Nuremberg engraver found particular expression in the takeover of his Signeform AD , which Aldegrever almost consistently cited as an AG .

Between 1526 and 1527 Aldegrever was granted civil rights in Soest . As a citizen he was then accepted into the local painters' guild, in which he remained until his death. He belonged to the group of so-called small masters .

Aldegrever was so respected as an artist that even Franz von Waldeck , the Catholic bishop of Münster, repeatedly commissioned the Lutheran artist. Portraits of the defeated episcopal opponents Jan van Leyden and Bernd Knipperdolling are still known today .

Aldegrever was repeatedly ascribed to having worked as a goldsmith and fire-glass painter on the side. According to the current state of research, this cannot be confirmed.

Aldegrever took political and religious influence with the introduction of the Reformation in Soest. On behalf of the council, he invited and accompanied the reformer Gerd Omeken from Lippstadt to the city of Soest.
