Bernd Knipperdolling (also Bernt or Bernhard Knipperdollinck, Knypperdollynck) (* around 1495 in Münster as van Stockem; †  January 22,  1536 there (executed)) was a leader of the Anabaptists in Münster during the Anabaptist Empire of Münster , a merchant and since the 23. February 1534 mayor .

Life

Knipperdolling came from a wealthy cloth merchant family in Munster and was a member of a radical wing of the Anabaptist movement. He was initially appointed executioner of Münster by Jan Bockelson (also Jan van Leiden) . After Bockelson's elevation to "King" Knipperdolling was appointed governor in the city ​​called " New Jerusalem ". After Prince-Bishop Franz Graf von Waldeck and his mercenaries had taken the long-besieged Münster in June 1535, Knipperdolling was arrested. Together with Jan van Leiden and Bernd Krechting , he was sentenced to death on January 6, 1536. TheDelinquents were tormented with red-hot pliers on January 22nd, 1536 on the Münster's Prinzipalmarkt and at the end were stabbed to death. Then the bodies of the three Anabaptists were hung in iron baskets on the tower of St. Lamberti in the city. The original baskets can still be seen high up on the south side of the church tower; Replicas are exhibited next to instruments of torture in the city ​​museum .
