The smallest house is in Wernigerode and is a socio-historical cultural monument . It is known for its small size.

history

It is located at Kochstrasse 43 and was built in 1792. Along with the Wernigerode Town Hall and Wernigerode Castle , it is one of the most famous buildings in the city. The house was built near the former city wall in a former craftsmen's quarter. The closer the buildings were to the city wall, the poorer the residents were.

The owners of the house at the time saved the gable walls and forced the small house into a 2.95 m wide gap between two neighboring houses. The eaves height of the house is 4.2 m, the front door is only 1.7 m high.

On the ground floor the house consists of a hallway and a kitchen, the first floor consists of a 9 m 2 living room and the top floor contained the bedroom. The toilet is at the back of a small courtyard, behind the house. The room heights are a maximum of approx. 1.90 m.

Pipe drills , cloth makers and shoemakers are recorded as residents . Up to eleven people are said to have lived in the house at the same time. It was inhabited until 1976. Today the house belongs to the city of Wernigerode. Today there is a small folklore museum in it .
