The via ferrata Pirknerklamm is a via ferrata in the municipality of Oberdrauburg , Spittal an der Drau district , Carinthia , Austria , which is specified with difficulty level C.

location

The Pirknerklamm via ferrata is located in the Pirknerklamm , through which the Pirkner Bach , a right tributary of the Drau , flows. The Pirkner Bach is protected as a natural monument . The gorge runs from the village of Unterpirkach (parking is available at the Bachbrücke) westward into the Lienz Dolomites , along the eastern foot of the Hochstadel .

course

From the entrance ( 635  m ) at an old mill, the very well secured via ferrata leads over various boulders in the Pirkner Bach and the gorge walls on both sides over around 250 meters in altitude through the Pirknerklamm. On the way, individual passages and stream crossings must be overcome with rope bridges ( postman walk; taut holding ropes and loose walking ropes). The highlight is the first weir system, which is climbed right next to the waterfall falling there. Since the spray almost always creates a rainbow there when the sun is out, this passage was called the rainbow fall.

After the first weir system, follow the course of the stream for about 200 m, cross it at a suitable point (arrow markings) and then enter a last passage on the right side of the stream, which leads over a short piece of rock, partly in the overhang, to the second weir system . You climb up into easy terrain via iron brackets there and follow the path secured with wire rope railings.

Combinations

On the descent, you meet the ÖTK -steig just below the “Dirndle-Rast” lookout point, via which you can continue to climb to the Hochstadelhaus ( 1780  m ), a starting point and destination for hikes in the Lienz Dolomites .

At the level of the entrance to the via ferrata there is another mill with an accessible cave on the other side of the stream, which leads to a small waterfall.

Remarks

In the event of sudden weather changes and floods, it is very dangerous to visit the gorge. Because of the risk of slipping and falling, it is not advisable to inspect the weir systems. The months June to October are named as the ideal time for a climbing tour.
