Klexikon is an online dictionary that was created in December 2014 and is aimed at children between the ages of six and twelve. The name Klexikon stands for children (K) and Lexicon. The dictionary is based on the Wikipedia model , uses the MediaWiki software, publishes all texts under the free Creative Commons license CC-BY-SA (attribution, distribution under the same conditions), uses free images from the Wikimedia media collection Commons and has some special basic rules that are also intended to do justice to the special target group children. This includes that all articles are appropriate, understandable and child-friendly. In addition, new authors have to register with an email in order to receive a user account.

After one year the dictionary had over 1,000 articles, after two years 1,500 and after just under three years 2,000 articles. The dictionary community collectively determines which articles should be written next. This is to ensure that the dictionary covers the most important topics, school subjects and areas of interest of children.

For the year 2017, the operator gave 2,564,239 page views ( page views on).

The Klexikon-Wiki was founded by the journalist Michael Schulte and the historian Ziko van Dijk, who was the chairman of Wikimedia Nederland from 2011 to 2014. The website is now run by the non-profit association Central for Educational Media in the Internet (ZUM), which also operates other wikis.

The Federal Ministry for Family, Seniors, Women and Youth classifies the Klexikon as a “useful” children's dictionary. The voluntary self-regulation of television sees the advantage in the dictionary that, unlike Wikipedia, it is specially written for children. The Austrian school portal describes the Klexikon as a "great reference work", it provides content specially tailored for children. The German portal Lehrer-Online speaks of a "Wikipedia alternative for children". Other supraregional institutions and media also recommend the Klexikon as an online dictionary for children. The Flensburger Tageblatt noted that the dictionary is a reference work and not a textbook .

In the project phase before and after the launch of the website, the dictionary was supported by Wikimedia Germany ; The focus was on a concept for an online encyclopedia for children. In addition, the Klexikon concept was further developed in cooperation with the Technical University of Dortmund and the Technical University of Cologne .
