The klimaaktiv building standard is a standard for energy efficiency , ecological quality, comfort and execution quality defined as part of the climate protection initiative klimaaktiv of the Austrian Federal Ministry for Climate Protection, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology . It goes beyond a pure energy standard and the increased use of renewable energy sources - the actual core program of klimaaktiv to reduce CO 2 emissions .

Story and concept

The building standard was developed as part of the klima: aktiv haus program for the broad introduction of sustainability criteria on the Austrian housing market and is part of the klima: aktiv building and renovation program in 2009 . klima: aktiv house is a further development of the house of the future concept of the Federal Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology . The aim is to achieve a share of the klima: aktiv standard in new residential construction of 20% by 2009. This new klima: aktiv standard is a broadly applicable further development of the total quality criteria and consists of a criteria grid according to which a maximum of 1000 points can be achieved can.

So far (as of 2011), 240,000 m² of living space in residential buildings and over 180,000 m² in service buildings have been built in accordance with the klima: aktiv standard in Austria, and in 2011 alone 200,000 m² of gross floor space was renovated.

The criteria catalog

Specifically, the catalog of criteria includes the following four areas:

  • Location and quality assurance: includes aspects such as the quality of the infrastructure in the vicinity of the building site from the point of view of climate protection (proximity to school, public transport, etc.), the availability of bicycle parking spaces, but also the accessibility of the building. Above all, the high quality of planning and execution is important so that the klimaaktiv standard is not destroyed by construction defects or mistakes in the design.

  • Energy and supply: By focusing on this area, the users are provided with an energy-efficient building with low heat and water requirements that is very cost-efficient to operate. The arithmetic proof can be provided either according to OIB guideline 6, 2015 or according to the Passive House planning package PHPP (version 9).
  • Building materials and construction: The choice of ecological building materials benefits both the health of the residents and the environment, as the pollution of the indoor air is kept very low and the materials have as little impact as possible on the environment during production and disposal.
  • Comfort and indoor air quality: The comfort in an apartment or house depends very much on the internal temperature and humidity and the catalog of criteria contains many measures, such as comfort ventilation, which take thermal and therefore health criteria into account.

To ensure that this new standard is implemented as quickly and widely as possible, appropriate training courses have been developed, for example offered by the Institute for Economic Development  (WIFI).

Categories of the energy standard

Energy pass - categories A ++ to G , heating requirements (HWB) of buildings
HWB in kWh / ( · a ) category Heating oil equivalent in l / a
≤ 10 A ++ Passive house 200-300 (a)
≤ 15 A + Nearest energy house 400-700 (a)
≤ 25 A.
≤ 50 B. Low energy house 1000-1500 (a)
≤ 100 C. Target value according to building regulations 2008 1500-2500 (a)
≤ 150 D. old, unrenovated buildings > 3000 (a)
≤ 200 E.
≤ 250 F.
> 250 G
(a)Based on a single-family house with 150 m² and a four-person household (without hot water)

An award was introduced in the certificate for renovations and new buildings, which is based on the point system of the criteria catalog (maximum 1000 points):

  • klimaaktiv BRONZE: Achievement of the basic criteria
  • klimaaktiv SILVER: from 750 points
  • klimaaktiv GOLD: from 900 points - GOLD status is only achieved by a building as a passive house
