The Acibeiro Monastery (Aciveiro or Santa María de Acibeiro; Azebeyrum) is a former Cistercian abbey in the province of Pontevedra in Galicia in Spain . It is located in the municipality of Forcarei around 50 km northwest of Pontevedra on the road to Lalín .
history
The monastery was founded in 1135 as a Benedictine monastery . It joined the Cistercian order around 1170 (according to other sources not until 1225). The monastery is a direct subsidiary of the Clairvaux Primary Abbey . In 1505, Pope Julius II decreed that he would join the Cistercian Congregation in Castile , which is said to have only taken place in 1519. The monastery was affected by French troops in 1809. When it was dissolved by the Mendizábal government in 1835, the monastery still had eight monks. A community of friends of the monastery has existed since 1974 and now houses a folklore museum.
Buildings and plant
The three-aisled, five-bay and transeptless church is Romanesque with baroque changes to the facade. It was consecrated around 1170. The east side has three semicircular apses , of which the middle one is significantly larger than the two on the side. The irregularly shaped enclosure is to the right (south) of the church.
