The Barbery Monastery is a former Cistercian abbey in France .
location
The monastery is located in the municipality of Bretteville-sur-Laize in the Calvados department , Normandy region , around 21 km south of Caen .
history
In 1140 a grangie of the Savigny Monastery was established in Barbery , which was elevated to the status of an abbey in 1176, almost thirty years after the Savigny Congregation had joined the Cistercian Order. As the daughter of Savigny, this belonged to the filiation of the Clairvaux Primary Abbey . This abbey on the site of today's farm "La Vieille Abbaye" was moved to its later location in 1181. The founder was Robert Marmion, a local landlord. The church was consecrated in 1246. In the 16th century, the insignificant monastery, which was largely abandoned, fell into Kommende . At the end of the 17th century it was reformed and partially reconstructed. It lasted until it was repealed in the course of the French Revolution in 1790, when it still had seven monks.
Buildings and plant
The foundation of a side wall of the church is still preserved. From the enclosure, restored in the 18th century, there is still a wing that forms the ground floor of a brick barn. A few other outbuildings have also been preserved, including the ruin of a two-story, rectangular logis from the 12th century with two vaulted halls on the ground floor , which was classified as a monument historique in 1933 .
