The Bonaval Monastery (Bona vallis) is a former Cistercian monk abbey in the municipality of Retiendas , Comarca Sierra Norte, in the northwest of the province of Guadalajara in Castile-La Mancha in Spain .
history
King Alfonso VIII of Castile donated the valley in which the monastery is located to the Cistercian order in 1164 (and finally in 1175). The settlement took place from the monastery Valbuena on the Duero . Thus Bonaval belonged to the filiation of the primary abbey of Morimond . The monastery, founded to ward off a Muslim invasion, owned large estates. After the monastery had joined the Castilian Cistercian Congregation, it lost its position as an independent abbey and in 1495 was subordinated to the monastery of Monte Sión in Toledo as a priory. As such, it developed into the “old people's home” of the order. During the time of the liberal government it was abandoned in 1821 in favor of the motherhouse in Toledo and subsequently fell into disrepair. Today it is in ruins.
Buildings and plant
Parts of the three-aisled church with a three-sided closed main apse , two rectangular side apses, parts of the right transept with a stair tower and the single-bay south aisle as well as parts of the enclosure building have been preserved from the abbey .
