In 1140, Count Amadeus III founded of Savoy, the abbey as a subsidiary of Fontenay Monastery from the filiation of the Clairvaux Primary Abbey . The first abbot was Lambert, brother of Saint Pierre de Tarentaise . The Notre-Dame church was consecrated as early as 1142 . The monastery grew rapidly. It was already in decline in the 15th century, but was destroyed by Geneva troops in 1590. In the 17th century, the monastery was rebuilt under Abbot Laurent Scott.
