The Chaloché monastery is a former Cistercian abbey in France .

location

The former abbey is located in the district of Chaumont-d'Anjou in the municipality of Jarzé Villages in the Maine-et-Loire department in the Pays de la Loire region , around 24 kilometers northeast of Angers .

history

The monastery, founded in 1121 on land donated by Hamelin d'Ingrandes, belonged to the Congregation of Savigny . With this it came to the Cistercian Order in 1147 and submitted to the filiation of the Clairvaux Primary Abbey . Thanks to donations from the Angevin nobility, especially those from Mathefelon , it quickly became rich. The church was consecrated in 1223. The buildings were rebuilt towards the end of the 17th century. In 1790 the monastery had only six monks. After the dissolution in the course of the French Revolution in 1790, the monastery was largely demolished.

Buildings and plant

Only a few remains of the right transept arm are left of the Romanesque church. The wing opposite the church is still present from the enclosure. The former abbot house still stands. An approximately 62 m long barn from the 13th century has also been preserved. A chapel from the same period serves as a residential building.
