The Charron Monastery ( Notre-Dame de Charron; Gratia Sanctae Mariae) is a former Cistercian abbey in the Charente-Maritime department of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region ( France ). The monastery was located in the municipality of Charron around 17 kilometers north of La Rochelle , near the sea.

history

The monastery was founded by Eleanor of Aquitaine in 1191 as the daughter of the La Grâce-Dieu monastery in Aunis and was thus part of the filiation of the Clairvaux primary abbey . After Geoffroi Ostorius, Lord of Marans , left the Alouettes swamps to the three monasteries of La Grâce-Dieu, Charron and St-Léonard-des-Chaumes for drainage and use in 1192 , they laid a kind of dike to protect this area against flooding , the later (occupied since 1273) so-called Bot de l'Alouette . The monastery was besieged by the Huguenots in 1562 , but restored in 1614. During the French Revolution , the monastery came to an end in 1791.

Buildings and plant

Two wings from the 17th century are now integrated into a farm. The rest of the complex has disappeared apart from a few remains of the wall.
