from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Forges Monastery was a Trappist monastery in Forges ( Orne Department ), north of Alençon , from 1816 to 1821 .

history

In 1816 Augustin de Lestrange founded the Saint Archange Raphaël (Holy Archangel Raphael) monastery in Forges for part of the Trappist women migrating back from Riedera monastery in Switzerland to their native France (30 km from La Trappe monastery ). As early as 1817 he tried to establish a foundation near the Bellefontaine monastery from there , but gave it up in August 1818 and instead founded the Gardes monastery , which still exists today. It was here that he led the last sisters who remained in Forges in 1821.
