history

The Marist monastery Furth was founded in 1915 because the fratres , who originally lived in Belgium , had to leave the country after the outbreak of the First World War . In the Lower Bavarian village they found accommodation in a summer villa with a park, which was built shortly before by Baroin Freifrau Philomena von Hornstein.

In 1946, “a youth school as a six-class high school for the next generation of the Order” was founded in Furth, initially rarely with more than 100 students. In 1965 it was renamed “Marist Gymnasium”, but it was not until 1976 that the school was officially recognized. Since then, the school is no longer run exclusively as a boarding school. Because of this, and since girls were also admitted from 1985, the number of students increased significantly. At this point in time, however, there was no upper secondary school at the Maristen Gymnasium; the students who wanted to take the Abitur usually completed the upper school at the Marist College in Mindelheim . It was only when the school was about to close in 1989 that the order decided on a “certain expansion of the school” in order to “secure the future of the school in the long term and make it attractive as an offer school”. At the end of the school year 1988/1989 the boarding school was closed; In addition, a new building was planned and the establishment of an upper level was approved for the children who have immediately registered. The upper school started in the school year 1994/1995, in 1997 the first high school graduates were able to leave. The inauguration of the new building above the monastery in a northerly direction took place on May 26, 1995. Today the school is a state-recognized mathematical, scientific, economic and linguistic grammar school for girls and boys. On August 1, 2006, the school became the sponsorship of the School Foundation of the Diocese of Regensburg.

Until April 14, 2000, the monastery was the seat of the Teutonic Order Province of the Marist School Brothers. Since then, one has belonged to the Greater Europe Central-West Province, but the commissioner as the legal representative for the Marist Brothers in Germany still has his seat in the Marist Monastery of Furth.

In 2015 the monastery was bought by the community of Furth, whereby the remaining fratres can still live in their familiar surroundings.
